Description : |
Continuing on from the lead article on page 1 of The Advertiser for 15 October 1958 which announced the death of Sir Douglas Mawson, this article summarizes Mawson's career including Shackleton's Nimrod expedition of 1907-09 and the ascent of Mt. Erebus, Mawson's own expedition of 1911-13, and his epic trek to survival. Along with a summary of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) voyages the article touches on his work as a geologist and his role in the establishment of Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE). As well as giving a summary of Mawson's ordeal in Adelie Land in 1912/13, the article writes of Mawson's ongoing committment to Antarctic research and to his study of the geology of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. The article also lists the many honours he received from British and foreign governments and societies. In 1951 the University of Adelaide recognized Mawson's achievements by naming the Mawson Laboratories in his honour. This was the first time that a building had been named after a member of the University's professorial staff. |
