Description :

The death of Sir Hubert Wilkins in Massachusetts, USA, is reported briefly. He had been working for the US Army's Quartermaster Research and Development Centre at the time of his death. Wilkins was born in South Australia's northern district of Mount Bryan in 1888. His explorations took him to the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as northern Australia. In addition he was a decorated war hero having served on the western front as a photographer during World War I.

A fuller report of his life was published on page 2 of The Advertiser.

His widow Lady Suzanne Wilkins, also Australian born, was a Broadway actress. Wilkins spent much of his life in the United States as the money to finance his many expeditions was available there. During World War II, and the years following, he was employed by the United States Army as an expert in cold weather conditions. His long held dream of an international ring of meteorological stations monitoring global weather conditions was finally realized with the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization a few years before his death.
