A recording of the speech made at the opening of an exhibition about the work of C. P. Mountford. The Premier of South Australia, Don Dunstan formally opens the exhibition by honouring the beneficial impact of Mountford's work on public attitudes. This exhibition was launched on 31 July 1970 and was held in the foyer of the Bastyan Wing (now Spence) of the State Library of South Australia. Titled Aboriginal art and culture; the writings and journeys of Charles P. Mountford, the exhibition ran for two months and contained examples of the photographs, manuscripts, drawings and publications donated to the State Library by Mountford (now organised as PRG 1218). During his opening address Premier Don Dunstan talks about the lack of appreciation for Aboriginal culture that was prevalent in the 1930s when Mountford started his work in the field and goes on to say that this work "was significant in developing an understanding of the Australian Aborigine". |
