Description : |
Watercolour on paper sketch of the residence of accountant William Fairbank on North Terrace, depicting the west corner of North Terrace and Stephens Place in Adelaide. This house was occupied in 1839 by John Luther Yeates, who arrived in the Bardaster on 22 January 1839 and died 6 weeks later. It was described in the Adelaide Assessment Book for 1848 as 'Brick buildings and Mannings House with offices, back entrance and outbuildings'. The first dwellings in South Australia consisted of tents, huts made out of bush timber, prefabricated buildings and crude wattle and daub structures with earth floors. As the prosperity of individuals and the colony took hold the opportunity to build permanent structures of stone or brick emerged. |
