Description : |
For stay-at-home travellers and other children who lived in the regional towns and countryside, books of geography took them to the many countries of Europe and the rest of the world and provided instruction and entertainment. While few books were produced about regional England and its various industries (although several games were, such as the card game The counties of England) there were books published about the capital, London. Grandmamma Easy's An Account of the Public Buildings of London takes the young traveller around the capital and the attractive illustrations provide detail of the buildings that augment the text. It was not just the older buildings that are described in the book, but many of those erected more recently in the capital's pride and with the expansion of the British Empire. For the modern reader it is interesting to compare the buildings with the way they are now as the London streetscape and the buildings themselves have changed in many instances. |
