Description : |
Pinnock's A catechism of the history of England ... is written in the then popular style of a conversation with questions and answers. For instance 'Q. Who succeeded William the Conqueror? A. His second son, William Rufus, who in the thirteenth year of his reign, was shot by accident, as he was hunting in the New Forest, A. D. 1160. He was buried at Winchester.' (p.32) This copy, which bears the inscription 'Miss Lucy May 1866', shows signs of heavy use by several generations of the Lucy Family, as there are a number of damaged pages with the loss of some text. Some sections of text have also been marked in pencil or pen. William Pinnock (1782-1843) was a schoolmaster who became a publisher of children's textbooks in association with Samuel Mander. In addition to his English history he produced other books on all of the English counties and on Greek and Roman history. |
