Extracts from Mates in hell : the secret diary of Don McLaren, POW of the Japanese 1942-1945, published by Seaview Press, Henley Beach, 1998. In this diary, Don McLaren describes his experiences as a prisoner of war in Changi, Burma and Japan. McLaren's original diary is held by the State Library of South Australia [D 6478(L)], and has been exhibited in the Library's Treasures Wall. Don McLaren enlisted in 1940, aged just 17 years. He was captured at the fall of Singapore, and was a prisoner of war from 1942 to 1945. Following the war he worked for the South Australian Housing Trust retiring in 1978 as a senior foreman. McLaren also volunteered as a trainer with the Walkerville Football Club, and was involved with teaching English to newly arrived migrants. He was named Walkerville Citizen of the Year in 1995, and also served as president of the Walkerville Returned Servicemen's League (RSL). |
