Description :

Attributed to J. Hitchen, this version of North Terrace reflects a developing city encroaching toward the lush river bank to the left.

This is the colour version of Opie's 'North Terrace' lithograph from Fourteen views of old Adelaide. It depicts the bustle and potential of Adelaide's busiest street and captures a moment of development and expansion. The magnificent Adelaide Hills act as the backdrop, as they do today and the River Torrens is to the left.

Mary Thomas, daughter of early pioneers and printing press operators, Robert and Mary Thomas, often referred to North Terrace in her diary including the Horticultural show, then held at the school house on North Terrace (PRG 1160/6, p. 18);

Feb. 16, 1842. The horticultural show was fixed for today, and not withstanding the rain, Mama, Frances, Helen, John, and I went to see it. The flowers, fruit, etc. were exhibited at the new school house in North Terrace. There were samples of wheat, barley, maize, oats, millet, potatoes, onions, rhubarb, vegetable marrow, parsnips, carrots, turnips, radishes, cabbages, peas, french beans, beetroot, pumpkins, melons, apples, grapes (black and white), almonds, figs, peaches, Cape gooseberries, one pomegranate, flax, sugar cane, butter, cheese, and butter milk cheese. The room was crowded, even too much so far for my comfort. Several ladies were there and I have since heard that Governor and Mrs. Gray were present besides.
