Description : |
"Mount Gambier's buildings were seen as distinctive, due to the use of locally quarried dolomite and limestone, and this became an important element of the character of the town. The wealth of Mount Gambier during the 1880s and 1890s was reflected in the quality of the architecture of banks, hotels and civic buildings, and in residential development." - from videocassette cover The town of Mount Gambier in South Australia's South East was settled in the 1840s. The raw materials available to the pioneers of the district resulted in a distinctive built heritage. Early commercial, civic and residential buildings were constructed of locally quarried dolomite and limestone and are now an important part of the region's character. |
