Description : |
Transport drivers from the Womens Auxiliary Australian Air Force The WAAAF was formed in March 1941 after some intensive lobbying. Initially the main employment for the women was in the area of wireless telegraphy, but once Japan entered the war in December 1941 the demand and tasks for the women's employment was broadened. Tasks now included armament work, electricial and mechanical work, fitters, instrument makers and meteorological assistants, besides employment in medical, transport, catering, equipment, signals and radar fields. Numbers also increased from 1500 women at the end of 1941 to over 18,000 in late 1944. |
