Description :

W.A.A.A.F. Underground Communications Unit stationed at Gawler operating morse code keys. L-r: Rae Bull; Helen Robertson; Shirley Carmichael.

The WAAAF was formed in March 1941 in response to intensive lobbying and because of a need for additional wireless telegraphists. When Japan entered the war in December 1941 the role of the women was broadened to include mechanics, electricians, armament and transport workers, and in the medical, signals and radar fields of work. Numbers increased from 1500 at the end of 1941 to over 18,000 in late 1944.
The WAAAF was the largest of the women's auxiliary services.
