Description : |
Four women, members of the Defence Society, climbing a steep steel ladder from the rear of the watching post on the Duncan Building, Franklin Street. The Defence Society was formed by Natalia Davies in 1933, in response to the rise of Nazism in Europe. By the time World War II began in 1939 the society's numbers had increased to 130, predominantly women. Training was provided in first aid, home nursing, motor engineering, elementary electrical work and fire drill. Later this was extended to include pistol shooting, map reading and unarmed defence. Natalia Davies was appointed deputy-commandant of the State's Women's Air Training Corps in 1940. |
