Description : |
Diary kept by William Webster Hoare on the Northern Territory Expedition with the title '1869 Adventures. Port Darwin. My diary W.W. Hoare. Pioneer. Landed February 5.' The diary is written in both pencil and ink, with daily entries, sketches throughout, and a couple of newspaper cuttings. Also includes a printed map of Australia, with pencil annotations showing his route from Adelaide to Darwin as a member of the Goyder Survey Expedition 1868-1869 ('surgeon assistant and artist'), and pressed flowers. William Webster Hoare migrated to South Australia with his brother, P.E. Hoare, aboard the Irene (ship) in 1862. It is believed William was trained as a pharmacist and obtained a position with the 1869-1870 Goyder Surveying Expedition to the Northern Territory as assistant to the surgeon, Dr Peel. He filled his spare time in the camp with sketching. His notebook (PRG 294 series 1) contains many small sketches of natural history items that he later worked up into full-size watercolour illustrations (PRG 294 series 4 - see image above PRG 294/4/1). Goyder recognised his talent and potential contribution. He supported Hoare's endeavours by providing him with materials and time to work with the expedition's naturalist, Friedrich Schultze. After Hoare's return to Adelaide in 1870, he worked as a dispensing chemist before returning to Britain via New Zealand. |
