Description :

Scrapbook dated 1868-1870, comprising mainly exploration and notes on the explorers of Northern Australia. Other scrapbooks in this colletion contain photographs, newspaper clippings, artworks and correspondence relating to the Northern Territory Survey Expedition under Goyder in 1868-1870, the Northern Territory life style and exploration, his travels to New Zealand, and after his return to Britain.

The Goyder Expedition successfully undertook a detailed survey of the future township of Port Essington (Darwin).
William Webster Hoare migrated to South Australia with his brother, PE Hoare, aboard the Irene (ship) in 1862. He was apparently trained as a pharmacist before obtaining the position with the 1869-1870 Goyder Surveying Expedition to the Northern Territory as assistant to the surgeon, Dr Peel.
He filled his spare time in the camp sketching, and his notebook (SLSA - PRG 294 series 1) contains many small sketches of natural history. He later worked these up into full-size watercolour illustrations (SLSA - PRG 294 series 4. See image above, PRG 294/4/5). Goyder, recognising his talent and the potential contribution, supported Hoare's endeavours, providing him with materials and time to work with the expedition's Adelaide-based German naturalist, Friedrich Schultze. After Hoare's return to Adelaide in 1870, he worked as a dispensing chemist before returning to Britain via New Zealand.
