Description :

A postcard captioned 'City of the dead' sent by Carew Reynell from Cairo dated 27 May 1915 in which he writes about living conditions for himself and two other soldiers.

Qarafa or 'The City of the Dead' is a walled necropolis that is also home to many families and small businesses. It is now, as it was in 1915, a tourist attraction.

Major Carew Reynell, the eldest son of Walter and Emily Reynell, was born at Rostrevor on 16 September 1883. A vigneron in civilian life, Carew applied for a commission with the 9th Light Horse in December 1914 and was appointed 2nd in command. On 7 August 1915 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Reynell was killed in action on 28 August 1915 during the battle for Hill 60. He is buried in the Hill 60 British Cemetery at Gallipoli.
