Description : |
Ernest Nister produced books of fine quality from his premises in Germany but also tailored his works to the English market, publishing in London and New York. He developed a number of techniques for making the image change on the page and is particularly noted for his kaleidoscopic pictures or magic window effect. See Roundabout pictures. Peeps into Fairyland is one of Nister's 'panorama picture books' which display the technique he perfected of making the three dimensional image 'pop up' when the page was turned. The stories in Peeps into Fairyland are by a number of authors, including Edith Nesbit, and also include several traditional fairy tales. It is rare for pop-up or movable books to survive intact. This example reflects the care that would have been taken with the book being used in a supervised situation. |
