Description : |
In March 1984 Graham Ferrett, Roger Lloyd and John Heard convened a meeting to plan South Australia's challenge in the America's Cup. Board members were elected on March 26 and Graham Ferrett was appointed project officer. The crew were selected in 1985, and included Sir James Hardy. The `South Australia' was designed by Ben Lexcen and the naming ceremony was held at Port Adelaide on April 28, 1985. Finance came from the State and Federal governments, 150 South Australian sponsors, merchandise and lotteries. This planned television commercial for Woolworths is an example of the kind of fundraising activities that formed part of the campaign. The `South Australia' lasted until round C in the America's Cup races and pulled out of the challenge in December 1986. The yacht was later sold for $375,000 to a Swedish syndicate. |
