Toy shops are magic caves full of wonderment to young children: the next best thing might be to have a book which with each new page revealed yet more shiny new toys. By the mid-19th century, toy manufacture was emerging as a growing business: toys were imported from the Germany and other parts of Europe as well as being locally made. Throughout the book as the Toyman takes the children from one delight to the other, the full range of toys available for the children of the wealthier classes is displayed. Besides those the toyman particularly points out, many other toys can be seen. Perhaps surprisingly, the book ends without the children having made a purchase. The book is inscribed 'Catherine Simpson, from Aunt Young'. The Simpson family arrived in South Australia in 1849. |
