Description : |
The history of a golden sovereign in rhymes and pictures provided a brief overview in the process of turning gold nuggets into gold coins. The intent of the book was to provide the interested child with enough information to lead him to further reading if wished. In Playing trades the aim of the book is not so serious: outside of their formal lessons with their mother, a group of children learn about some of the trades and occupations of the people around them. On a holiday in the country the children are able to interact with country people and country occupations. The most interesting part of the book, however, is in the illustrations which show both girls and boys working at blacksmithing, coopering, tailoring, and shoe-making. Books of street cries were the earliest books about occupations that were written for children: in these the traditional cries of street vendors were illustrated for battledores and chapbooks. The uncle's present is an example. From these early beginnings and through books such as Playing trades and History of a golden sovereign grew the many books about trades and occupations that are available to children today. |
