Description :

A synthetic speech toy, featuring eight different animal and bird sounds which are activated by pulling a string, with a verse and pictures about each animal. The animals featured are a cock, donkey, goat, duck, cat, sheep, cow, and horse.

Speaking picture books were first produced in Germany in the late 19th century, and were translated and produced for the market in England, France and Spain. Variations of the concept continued to be published periodically, and are now extremely rare.

This copy was donated by T V Holland who attended Prince Alfred College from 1930 to 1938 and subsequently joined the Royal Australian Air Force and served in World War Two. The book is inscribed 'From Aunty Hilda. Hamley's, Regent St., London, 1924'. The book was enjoyed by three generations before being donated to the State Library.

When donated the book was damaged and the internal mechanism of the sound box was visible. It has since been conserved and repaired.
