Portrait of W.L. Marchant from Mannanarie from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/1). The Marchant brothers were 5 in number: George, Frank, William L and John C who were the pastoralists and a 5th brother died in a riding accident near the Burra mine. They were the sons of William L Marchant, who arrived from England in 1840 aboard the Fairlie. Frank and George had properties adjoining each other, Arkaba and Wilpena in the 1850s and 1860s. John, the other brother farmed on the Eyre Peninsula. WILLIAM MARCHANT Born at Freshford, Somerset on 30 May 1828 William Marchant had two marriages, firstly to Georgiana Phillips, who was born on 7 August 1833 at Swan River, Western Australia. The marriage was at Coonatto, South Australia on 16 April 1857. Georgiana died 25 May 1866 in London, England. They had two children Mary Eliza, 1858 - and Edith Caroline, 1863 -. He then married Mrs. Bull on 22 February 1871 and there were two children named Sir Alfred nee Bull and Emma nee Bull. William introduced Durham cattle and Clydesdale horses to South Australia. He was involved with several properties in including Manannarie, Aroona, Ediowie, in the northern parts of the state. Finally he had Burnside station, Strathalbyn. He retired to Adelaide and then returned to England where he died. Click here to see details of other Marchant family members. |
