Description :

Portrait of P.H. Birt from Mount Brown from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/4).

There are two other members of the Birt Family in the S.A. Northern Pioneers composite, W.H. Birt, and H.H.Birt.

Henry John Richman  was among the first who took up land near Mount Brown in the Flinders Ranges. The Victorian gold rush deprived him of manpower and he himself also tried his luck at the diggings for a time but returned to Mount Brown and sheep farming. Richman Valley and Richman's Creek were named after him and are reminders of his presence in the area. His station's name was recorded as Italli Italli which is believed to be a corruption of Iccala Iccala. Abraham Scott and Walter Kingsmill held 79 square miles of land at Mt Brown during the late 1850s and 1860s at which time the property carried 6000 sheep and 1000 cattle. It was a well-watered run with many wells sunk. Pichi Richi Pass crosses the property.

Harry Birt (but which of the three brothers has not been discovered) helped Peter Ferguson muster his remaining stock after the drought of the 1860s.

Information on Mt Brown station is sketchy with a succession of leaseholders. The position held by P H Birt at the station has not been determined.
