Cathedral Rock, Mt Remarkable, S.A. 30 September 1898 from an album of watercolour sketches by Rev. Alfred Sells, artist, painted in South Australia and during a journey back to England via Tasmania, Ceylon, Aden, France, Italy and Dorset (England), together with separate views of Fullarton Road at Mitcham and Brownhill Creek. Also includes six prints of other sketches taken from slides. Mount Remarkable lies within the area of the Nukunu Aboriginal people who named it Wangyarra, 'arra' meaning running water. Mount Remarkable was named by Edward John Eyre during his 1840 expedition. Alfred Sells was an Anglican clergyman from England who arrived in South Australia in May 1877. He became the Incumbent of Holy Trinity Church at Lyndoch and it is believed that during his time there he created the original drawings for a series of watercolours which were completed in England in 1898. Sells was later the Incumbent at St Michael's Church at Mitcham for four years from February 1884. He returned to England in 1888. |
