Description : |
A young boy salutes the Union Jack on a flag pole held by a young girl. In 1911 the South Australian Education Department outlined the ceremony of 'Saluting the flag' to be carried out in schools:
This included the loyal affirmation which by 1969 had been modified to: 'I am an Australian. I love my country. I salute her flag. I honour her Queen. I promise to obey her laws.'
The photograph is from a collection of lantern slides which belonged to Lydia Longmore, the first woman inspector of infant schols in South Australia. |
