Description : |
Scene at the Old Gum Tree, possibly Proclamation Day. Proclamation Day in South Australia falls on the 28 December and commemorates the reading of the document known as the Proclamation of South Australia by George Stevenson, the Secretary to Governor Hindmarsh, in 1836. The official party stood beneath an old gum tree while the proclamation was read. The ceremony has been celebrated at the current location near an old bent gum tree since 1857, although there is still much debate as to whether this is the same tree where the proclamation was originally made. |
