Description : |
Papers of Benjamin Herschel Babbage and family comprising diaries and sketchbooks of E.M. Babbage, diary and sketches of Eden Herschel Babbage, album containing photographs of St Marys, autograph album and sketch by Zara Georgina Babbage, Clare family papers relating to 'the Castle' estate, St Marys, Babbage family tree and historical extracts. Benjamin Babbage was the leader of an 1858 South Australian government expedition sent out to explore the northern regions of the colony, and find a route through the apparent barrier of salt lakes that blocked forward progress. He set off on this expedition further north from Port Augusta. Equipped by the government for 18 months he was eventually recalled for being too slow. He was replaced by Peter Egerton Warburton, just as he discovered a way through the salt lakes. |
