Description : |
Members of the Strathalbyn Football Club, Premiers of Hills Association in 1919 and 1920. The Strathalbyn Football Club was established following a meeting at the Commercial Hotel on the 27th of June 1879. The following day a game was hastily convened but unfortunately soon ended when "..the ball and a piece of glass bottle trying conclusions, shortly after the commencement of the game, in which the former came off second best". (Southern Argus newspaper quoted in First one hundred years of Strathalbyn Football Club p. 5.) The Club's first match against another team was on the 6th of August 1879 when they welcomed the Adelaide Club but were defeated 6 goals to 2. 'Strath', who wear red and white and are known as the Roosters, first played in the Hills Association in which they faced clubs including Hahndorf and their fierce rivals Mount Barker. The Club entered the Great Southern League in 1930 but went to the Hills Central League in 1931, until 1962, when they moved back to the Great Southern League. |
