Description : |
The Tyler children (from left) Jane, Andrew and David, engaged in moving the newly delivered load of firewood from the front yard of 12 Manningham Street, Manningham, to the wood heap. The children's mother described the process: 'After the firewood had been delivered the whole family loaded the wheelbarrow to be wheeled to the wood heap. My husband, Don, was the only one allowed to stack the wood; it had to be done 'properly'. The children had a ride back for the next load ... Don always said he was warmed three times' - moving the wood, chopping the wood and burning the wood. This was a common chore for children each winter when the season's wood for the indoor fire was delivered. As well as cut lengths of eucalypt, the family might also choose to have mallee roots delivered. The wood might have been stored under the rain water tank stand, to be dry and out of the weather. |
