Description :

Photographic reproduction of a marine painting of H.M.C.S.'Yatala' by E. Magraith which was presented to Arthur Searcy in 1904.

Photographic reproduction of a marine painting of HMCS Yatala by E. Magraith which was presented to Arthur Searcy President of the South Australian Marine Board in 1904.

The South Australian government employed a number of small schooners and later steam vessels which were used for a variety of purposes including servicing the lighthouses scattered along the coast. Yatala was locally built at Port Adelaide and was used predominantly for necessary and ongoing survey work on the coast. The schooner and the crew were involved in the rescue of the crew of the steamer Osmanli which was wrecked in 1853 at D'Estrees Bay, Kangaroo Island. In 1864 Yatala was sent to the Northern Territory to survey the coast of South Australia's new territory. She was damaged when she ran aground and was later condemned.
