Description : |
Luncheon menu issued by the Commonwealth Railways, 1952. Also includes information for passengers and "Facts about the Trans-Australian Railway." Includes picture of South Coast District (Western Australia). The construction of the Trans Australian railway in 1917 linked the east and west sides of the country for the first time. Port Augusta was the operating centre of the Commonwealth Railways. The industries and work which the railway provided in the town included washing of laundry, supply of fresh food such as meat and fish, as well as train crew, engineers, general tradesmen, and the Workshops located in Port Augusta where locomotive and rolling stock repairs were undertaken. As this train service begins in Sydney and concludes in Perth the service has become known as the Indian Pacific reflecting the names of the two oceans on either side of the country. |
