Description : |
Records comprising 91 volumes of photographs of ships, organised under type of ship, or ownership, and with basic caption information. The volumes were compiled by shipping enthusiast Arthur Edwardes, using original prints if available, but most commonly copy prints. In the 1880s exports of wheat and wool and imports of railway needs and inland supplies led to a boom in Port Augusta shipping. This continued through until 1892-93 when the Great Northern Railway was extended to Oodnadatta. However in 1894 until 1902 the great drought depressed the inland and stagnated shipping activity in the port. Note in this picture the bales of wool waiting to be loaded onto the ships; also that three of the vessels have auxiliary steam. |
