Description : |
Records comprising 91 volumes of photographs of ships, organised under type of ship, or ownership, and with basic caption information. The volumes were compiled by shipping enthusiast Arthur Edwardes, using original prints if available, but most commonly copy prints. One of wharves and jetties in Port Augusta in 1889. Perhaps the men in the photograph are waiting for a ship to load up the wheat bags which surround them. The effects of drought severely influenced exports through this most northerly of South Australia's ports. Once built the railways became the main reason for the port's continued existence as the coal needed by the trains was imported through Port Augusta. The town's supplies continued to come in by sea until road transport supplied the need instead. Port Augusta was officially closed as a port in 1974. It continues as the gateway to the Outback with road and rail links through the town. |
