Map of Australia showing railway systems; map of Port Augusta, South Australia showing the land acquired by Commonwealth Government for Transcontinental Railways and plan of Transcontinental Estate, Port Augusta, showing building lots available. Also includes "copy of Offer to purchase lots in the Transcontinental Estate situated at Port Augusta, South Australia" with Alice McGowan, of Yarrum Sth, Gippsland, Victoria being the applicant to purchase lots 172, 179 and "Acceptance of Offer..." issued and dated 12th August, 1915 and signed H.C. Daniel [Vendor] 3 maps on 1 sheet. The optimism for Port Augusta's progress and future is evident with slogans on the map including "The Site of Big Terminals", "Port Augusta - The Inevitable Point of Location for Great Factories and Warehouses". The Transcontinental Railway was in the latter stages of its construction. Finally in 1917 the Australian continent would be crossed from east to west by rail, with Port Augusta the hub of operations with workshops, and all the other facilities required for the long rail crossing. |
