Captain Matthew Flinders in his voyage of discovery in 1802 first navigated the waters of Spencer Gulf. In March of that year he anchored his ship Investigator not far from the present city of Port Augusta, where he explored the head of the gulf to determine whether the gulf might open a way into the interior, or even be a strait connecting with the Gulf of Carpentaria and dividing the continent in two.
