Description :

Four young girls play 'house' in a corner of the classroom.

In B 63020/34 another classroom can be seen with a 'home' corner behind a white lattice fence. Quiet play in this corner set up within the classroom allowed the girls to act out the home duties they saw their mothers doing. Here they could interact with other girls as well as with the dolls and furnishings in the 'house'. It may also have eased the transition from home to school for some children.

This photograph is from a series of views taken from lantern slides of kindergarten and infant school premises and activities in South Australia and New South Wales; the slides were owned and used by Lydia Longmore, O.B.E., the first woman to be an Inspector of infant schools in South Australia.
