Description : |
Comprises South Australian almanac circulated to advertise Bignell & Young and carrying useful information including calendar, mail and train timetables and lists of district councils, the royal family, members of parliament and senior civil servants. Bignell and Young, (later known as Young and Gordon) were merchants of Port Augusta. Storekeeper Francis Bignell took over the Port Augusta drapery business of Tassie & Co. in 1867. In 1871 he formed a partnership with Thomas Young (1844-1913). Bignell & Young, merchants and forwarding agents, traded throughout the north of South Australia in drapery, groceries and hardware. The partnership was dissolved in 1881. In 1881 Robert Gordon joined the business which became a limited company, Young & Gordon Ltd., in 1920. O.J. Young (1884-1956) was succeeded by Peter Young (d.1987) as managing director. Young & Gordon was sold to Demasius Limited in 1980. |
