Description :

Plan, contract and specification of a house to be erected at 103 Wright Street, Adelaide (City Acre 480) for Mr WH Williams.

This is an example of a straight front stone house, a style popular between the 1870s and the 1890s. During the second half of the 19th century the detached house on its own allotment became the principal type of dwelling in Adelaide. Following the expansion into the suburbs during the 1860s South Australia experienced a short but spectacular period of unprecedented development from about 1870 to 1885. The catalysts for this prosperity were South Australia's exports of copper, wool and wheat. However this period failed to produce a distinct "boom style" of housing. By the turn of the century small cottages of two or three rooms gradually diminished in numbers and houses containing 5 rooms per dwelling and one room for each person became the average.
