Description :

This plan shows the Southern Cross Hotel which was erected in 1879. The building was designed by Daniel Garlick, and built by Charles Farr. It was an Italian style and richly ornamented, of three storeys with a balustraded parapet and deep balconies. The front facade was of freestone with cement dressings, with the other walls of brick. There were 20 bedrooms on the upper floors.

Two pubs operated on this site: the first Southern Cross existed from 1846 to 1874 and was described as being of 7 rooms and 2 storeys, and was noted for its billiard room. A new building, utilising this architectural plan, was erected in 1879. The Southern Cross Hotel was demolished in 1974 to make way for a shopping arcade. The publican's license was relocated to 21 James Place.
