Description :

Portrait of Wonggu taken in Yirrkala in 1948.

Leader of the Djapu clan of Caledon Bay, Wonggu was one of the first traditional owners to settle at the Yirrkala Mission, when he relocated there with his sizable family in 1937-38. (He is reported to have had more than 20 wives and 60 children).

Yirrkala founder T. T. Webb encountered Wonggu on his initial reconnoitre to the Mission site, describing him as "tall, strongly built, dignified of mien, with a strong expressive face, and the bearing of a patriarch."

With a birth date estimated at 1880, Wonggu was 68 years of age when Mountford took this photograph. He passed away in 1959.
