Description :

Portrait of Daymuni, a girl from Yirrkala, 1948.

In Mountford's 1967 publication Australian Aboriginal portraits he describes Daymuni (he calls her Imoraka) as showing "strong traces of Malay ancestry."

For centuries before European colonization Malay fisherman had been visiting the Arnhem Land coast looking for the sea cucumber trepang. This trade led to an influence on the art and technology of the Yolngu people, and there was some intermarrying.
