Description :
Front of St Xavier's Cathedral looking across Wakefield Street.

The foundations of St Francis Xavier's Cathedral were laid in 1851, but subsequent building was delayed until sufficient funds were raised to continue the work. Construction began again five years later and the first part of the church was officially opened in 1858, but the building was not entirely completed until 1926. The diminutive tower was extended to its current height in 1996.
