Description : |
Portrait of Dr Robert (Bob) Miller, Ichthyologist on the 1948 American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land. Dr Miller worked as Associate Curator of Fishes with the Smithsonian Institution. Mountford took this portrait at Oenpelli. Over 30,000 fish specimens were collected for Miller's work during the expedition. Most of the fish were collected at the Yirrkala, where Miller was camped about 200 metres from the coral reefs. Of the specimens collected, about 200 different species were identified, many new to science. Dr Miller used nets, spears and specially prepared mixtures poured into the water to capture and collect the fish. He employed a number of Aboriginal helpers who wondered at his need to collect small inedible fish as well as the good eating fish. |
