View of 'Rocky Islands' from the sea, North Groote Eylandt. Photograph taken by Mountford on the 1948 American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land. Many landforms such as these are associated with creation myths and the activities of ancestral beings. Before the time of creation, according to Aboriginal belief systems, people believed that the landscape was devoid of features such as watercourses, hills and valleys, and that no creatures existed. Then during the time of creation, beings considered to be the forebears of the Aboriginal people, or 'ancestral beings', walked upon the earth and in their activities created the topography. These beliefs are reflected in artistic depictions of the beings and are expressed in ceremonial activity. |
