Description : |
Interior view of a passenger cabin on the SS 'Euripides' showing a single bed, a smaller built-in bunk, and other furniture including a basket chair and dressing table. By the early 20th century passenger accommodation was comfortable and in first and second class at least was relatively roomy. This cabin contained a single bed, with a day bed, wardrobe, washstand and a comfortable wicker chair. Euripides was an Aberdeen White Star liner of 15,300 tons, built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast. In 1914, possibly after the voyage on which this photo was taken, it was one of 28 vessels requisitioned by the Australian government and fitted out as a troop ship. It was equipped to carry 136 officers, 2204 other ranks and provided stabling for 20 horses. Following the war Euripides was returned to civilian service, and in 1932 was acquired by the Shaw Savill & Albion Line and renamed Akaroa. The ship was finally scrapped in 1954. |
