Description :

Premises of the former Supreme Court, Angas Street, Adelaide, on Town Acre 409.

Now the Adelaide Magistrates Court, this building was formerly the Supreme Court of South Australia until 1873, then until 1891 the Local and Insolvency Courts and thereafter the Police Court, now called Magistrates Courts. It is one of the oldest public buildings in Adelaide.

Construction work began in on 10 November 1847 and the building was completed in February 1851.The design was prepared by Richard Lambeth who was the successor to the Colonial Engineer, Edward Charles Frome.

There were difficulties and delays with the erection of the building, particularly in obtaining a sufficient number of large blocks of stone at such an early time in the settlement's history. The stone is likely to have been sourced from several quarries. This building's facade with its Doric portico is of sandstone. Many additions have been made to the building over the 150 years of its life and very little of the internal structure of the original building now remains, apart from the large skylight, canopy and public gallery.

The court is listed on the Register of the National Estate and the South Australian Heritage Register.
