Description : |
Collection of postcards, and colour and black and white photographs of lighthouses collected by Jim Garbutt, together with notes on many of the lighthouses, and magazines produced by lighthouse authorities and enthusiasts. Troubridge Hill lighthouse was built in 1980, to complement the light on Troubridge Island just offshore to the northeast. When the new light was completed Troubridge Island lighthouse was automated, demanned and downgraded to a minor light. Troubridge Hill lighthouse guards the entrance to St Vincent Gulf. Troubridge Hill lighthouse is an innovative design in custom-made wedge shaped red bricks. These require no rendering, and the striking red tower makes a strong day mark for shipping. A similar lighthouse was constructed at Guilderton in Western Australia. The tower soars 33 metres and stands 62 metres above sea level, with a range of 39 kilometres. It is powered by mains electricity with standby diesel power. After a period of experimenting with stainless steel towers in the 1970s lighthouse engineers began utilising other materials including clay bricks. Both Guilderton and Troubridge Hill lighthouses received awards for their innovative use of this traditional building material. |
