Description :

Architectural drawing by Walter Hervey Bagot for the Library of the University of Adelaide. He also designed Bonython Hall, St Peter's and St Francis Xavier Cathedrals and the State War Memorial.

Walter Hervey Bagot designed the Barr Smith Library of the University of Adelaide. It is built of red brick with stone dressings with a freestone portico. A number of additions have been made to the Library since the 1950s.
Only three Australian libraries are built in a classical style on a monumental scale: the Mortlock Wing of the State Library of South Australia, the Barr Smith Library and the circular reading room of the State Library of Victoria, which is modelled on the former Reading Room of the British (Museum) Library.
The Library is listed in the Register of the National Estate and the South Australian Heritage Register.
