Description : |
An aboriginal man retrieving Expedition gear from partically submerged dinghy, off Bickerton Island, during the 1948 American- Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land. Whilst based on Groote Eylandt, Margaret McArthur established a nutritional survey camp on Bickerton Island, located just to the north west of Groote Eylandt. Ray Specht, the Botanist, also worked from this location, and Mountford made a brief visit there. This image further illustrates some of the many difficulties experienced with the transport of supplies for the Expedition. Boxes of gear, perhaps for the nutrition survey or botany work, float in the sea whilst an Aboriginal man picks them out of the water. |
