Description :

This newspaper column presents comments from letters to the editor both for and against changing German place names in South Australia. A writer against the move states that to change place names would be an example of "petty spite" and asks "Surely we Australian Britishers are great enough to be magnanimous and courteous". A writer for the move states that it would "proclaim our entire disapprobation of Germany's demonstrated readiness to go back on her word to a nation weaker than herself, and of the barbarities her soldiers practised on the non-combatants of one of the smallest countries in Europe."

In 1917 an Act of Parliament changed 69 place names of German origin in South Australia. Some were changed back in 1935 and 1986, but others remain.
