Description : |
MINLATON: The Town Hall The Minlaton Town Hall stands on a prominent corner site. The original building, the Minlaton Institute, was built in 1880/81 and was of a simple rectangular design with a central door. When opened, the library contained 50 books. The building served a multitude of functions including housing meetings of the Oddfellows and Rechabites, church functions, a court room, and dances and theatrical performances. A skating rink was provided until 1948. The District Council of Minlaton rented space in the building from 1888. A number of extensions and alterations were made over the next few decades, and the Council took over the property and assets of the Institute in April 1935. Finally in 1937/38 another round of modifications gave the present building. The original hall was removed and replaced, with a second storey being added. This is built of random limestone masonry with rendered quoins and architraves. The front section visible in this photograph is designed in the Art Deco style, with curved features to entrance porches, and horizontal banding which incorporates sun shading. It contains improved facilities and acoustics for performances and the screening of films. |
